Jaws MD5 Raw
CaddyIndex™ breakdown: what our research found across each of the six performance dimensions, with cited sources.
You're a better player who wants the MD5's elite spin and tour-blade shotmaking in a raw, low-glare finish, with expanded grind options for tight lies and high lofts.
You want maximum forgiveness, a finish that won't rust, or the latest release.
Pros
- Every bit of the JAWS MD5 spin technology in a raw, low-glare finish
- Adds an X-grind in 54/56 and a low-bounce T-grind to the range
- Elite spin - JAWS grooves and 84 contact points
- A solid yet soft feel, pleasantly soft off the face
Cons
- A compact tour blade - less forgiving than a cavity-back wedge
- The raw face rusts over time, which some players dislike
- A 2020 model - several years old now
By dimension
Forgiveness
Tour-blade - modest by design. The MD5 head is a compact, traditional tour-blade built for shotmaking rather than forgiveness; the Raw is the same MD5 head with every bit of the technology, just a raw finish. Among the less forgiving wedges - a tour shape that rewards a clean strike.
Distance
A standout - the Raw offers the same high, consistent spin as the finished MD5; the JAWS grooves added 500 RPM and dropped launch 1 degree versus the MD4 (and rust does not add spin), the grooves giving controlled flight. Among the better wedges for distance control.
Workability
Highly workable - the Raw adds two grind options (the X-grind extended to 54 and 56 degrees and a new high-loft, low-bounce 8-degree T-grind) on top of the MD5's grind range, the tour-blade shape and grinds giving shotmaking versatility. Among the more workable wedges - a tour blade with elite, expanded grind options.
Feel
Soft and refined - the MD5 has a solid yet soft feel, pleasantly soft off the face, a responsive tour feel. Among the better wedge feels - a soft, refined tour blade, with the raw face wearing in over time.
Sound
A soft, muted note - the soft off-the-face impact gives a muted sound, a refined acoustic. A clean, muted note.
Looks at address
Among the best - the raw finish gives a low-glare look many tour players prefer (also offered in a sleek Tour Grey that wears over time), a classic Mack Daddy tour-blade shape. Among the cleanest tour-blade wedges - a striking raw, low-glare look.
