Frequently asked questions about golf tech
Launch monitor, rangefinder or GPS, which do I need?
They do different jobs. A launch monitor measures your ball flight (speed, carry and spin) for practice and fitting. A rangefinder gives a precise laser yardage to the flag. A GPS watch or handheld shows distances to the green and hazards at a glance. Most golfers start with a GPS or rangefinder for on-course yardages and add a launch monitor only if they practise seriously.
Is a golf launch monitor worth it?
If you practise with intent or want a home simulator, yes. Entry units give you ball speed and carry for a few hundred pounds, and mid-range models add accuracy and simulator software. A launch monitor won't fix a swing on its own, but the feedback makes practice far more productive than hitting balls blind.
Are rangefinders with slope legal in competition?
Yes, as long as slope is switched off. Slope adjusts the yardage for uphill and downhill shots and isn't allowed in competition, so any rangefinder whose slope mode can be disabled, which is almost all of them, is legal once you turn it off. Many have an external switch or light so playing partners can see slope is off.
