Mavrik Sub Zero
CaddyIndex™ breakdown — what the agentic research found across each of the six performance dimensions, with cited sources.
Low-handicap player (0-12) with 95+ mph swing speed who wants a low-spin tour-style fairway that doubles as a credible tee weapon.
You swing under 90 mph, miss center regularly, or need loft adjustability — the standard Mavrik or Max is the right pick.
Pros
- Golf Monthly Best Fairway Wood of 2020 — long and surprisingly forgiving for a low-spin model
- ~251yd average carry off the deck (15°) — robot-ranked near the top of the 2020 ClubTest field
- Compact 169cc shape plus an open face angle means tour-style workability with low-spin penetrating flight
- 14g / 2g interchangeable weights tune for max distance (front) or extra forgiveness (rear)
Cons
- Off-centre hits punished more than the standard Mavrik or Max
- Fixed hosel — no loft / lie adjustment (OptiFit was omitted on the Mavrik fairways)
- Now five years old — superseded by the Epic Speed (2021), Paradym (2023), Elyte TD (2025)
- Metallic crack acoustic still falls short of premium muted tour-fairway standards
By dimension
Forgiveness
Reviewer testing: off-center hits are punished more than on the standard family sibling, though there is a decent level of forgiveness on offer, especially if the heavier weight is positioned at the rear. Ball speed preservation on off-center is nearly as good as the forgiveness sibling. The compact 169cc head sacrifices some perimeter MOI for ball speed and workability, but the face cup + internal stiffening blades retain face speed well.
Distance
Reviewer testing: in the stock 15°, struck the ideal balance between high launch and low spin, producing average carries off the deck in excess of 251 yards. Robot testing: ranked near the top in carry distance. Fast-swing players often find this model goes farther because of the lower spin, with some of the longest carry and distance ever seen in any fairway wood. Best fairway wood of 2020 in one major group test.
Workability
Reviewer testing: compact head, face shape, and leading edge architecture preferred by better players who like to work the ball. If you like to shape the ball a certain way it will do that. More open face angle from address — what better players request — encourages active manipulation. Strong shot-shape control for a 2020 fairway, well above the family standard or forgiveness siblings.
Feel
Reviewer testing: subtle feedback to the hands when contact wandered towards the heel or toe — informative tactile profile. Solid, powerful contact with the internal titanium rib system. The compact 169cc head concentrates vibration into a sharper, more responsive feel than the larger forgiveness sibling. Above-average tactile profile for the segment.
Sound
Reviewer testing: sound was a medium volume, crisp metallic crack — fairly consistent across the face. Better than the family standard sibling and significantly better than the 2021 family acoustic. Internal titanium rib system delivers a more controlled acoustic. Above-average for the segment.
Looks at address
Reviewer testing: 169cc — the smallest in the family — shorter both from heel to toe and from face to tail. More open face angle gives a premium tour-fairway address shape. Triaxial carbon crown adds clean black look. Among the best address aesthetics in the family.
