Best for

You're a 0-5 HCP at 90-120mph who wants the Grand Slam-winning Callaway tour cavity back + 'best feeling Apex iron' + internal/external MIM tungsten weighting + minimal offset shape control with surprisingly forgiving cavity-back stability.

Avoid if

Your handicap exceeds 5 (use the Apex Pro 21 or Apex DCB 21), you need high launch + max forgiveness (use the standard Apex 21 or DCB 21), or you want current-generation tech (use the Apex CB 24 replacement).

Pros

  • Grand Slam winning iron between Schauffele + Rahm — most played iron on PGA Tour
  • Best feeling Apex iron per reviewer testing — 1025 forged hollow body + 'tremendously pure' light snap
  • Internal + external MIM tungsten weighting — precise CG location + adjustable external swingweight without altering CG
  • Much more forgiving than expected for a tour cavity back + 2022 Golf Digest Gold Hot List recognition

Cons

  • Recommended for players with low single-digit handicaps — narrow fit (0-5 HCP)
  • Mid/low launch + spin — adequate to hold green or work shot, but not high-launching for higher-HCP players
  • Now 4 years old — superseded by Apex CB 24 (2024) which Callaway designed as replacement for tour-popular TCB
  • Originally tour-only — limited consumer availability + premium pricing reflects this exclusivity

Forgiveness

Modest

The Apex TCB irons are much more forgiving than expected, though they're recommended for players with low single-digit handicaps. Customized internal and external MIM'd tungsten weighting allows precise CG location. The external tungsten weight (visible as the back plate with two screws) is adjustable and allows you to change swing weight without altering the CG position. The 17-4 tour-tuned face plate provides extra ball-speed retention. Numbers remained consistent shot to shot, even on strikes that were a little thin. Above-average forgiveness for tour-cavity-back category — much more forgiving than expected + internal/external MIM tungsten + 17-4 tour-tuned face plate, but designed for low single-digit handicaps only.

80

Distance

Strong

6-iron regularly flew over 180 yards when testing on the Flightscope X3 launch monitor. Apex heritage comes through in the high ball speeds on pure strikes. TCB ranks above average in distance, putting more focus on distance than pure blades like the Apex MB. Modern focus on lower spin and distance. Hollow iron — balls spring off the face a little more lively than a one-piece forging. Above-average distance for tour-cavity category — 180+yd 6-iron carries + 'above average' ranking vs pure blades + hollow body lively face response.

84

Workability

Excellent

Between tour brand ambassadors, the Apex TCB has won the Grand Slam (4+ major championships in last 4 years). Muscle back DNA in a forged cavity back — most played iron on the PGA Tour. The TCB looks the part of a Tour/players iron with very little offset and a thin top line and compact head. TCB irons are well suited to players who would like to use an MB standard iron but also appreciate a little extra forgiveness. Top-tier workability — multi-major tour validation + minimal offset + 'muscle back DNA in cavity back' + most-played iron on PGA Tour.

92

Feel

Class-leading

Thanks to the forged 1025 carbon steel, the Apex TCB delivers softness, and the Apex heritage lends a bit of crispness with a snap when struck pure, making it the best feeling Apex iron. Feel is crisp and solid off the face, with a gentle thud sound contributing to a soft feel. Feel of the Apex TCBs is largely soft, with a side of crispness, and solid strikes produce a light snap sound that feels tremendously pure. 1025 Forged Hollow Body Construction delivers iconic Apex feel. Top-tier feel — explicitly rated 'best feeling Apex iron' + 1025 forged hollow body + 'tremendously pure' crisp/soft impact + iconic Apex heritage.

94

Looks at address

Class-leading

At address, the Apex TCB looks the part of a Tour/players iron with very little offset and a thin top line and compact head. Tour-inspired shaping is immediately obvious, with the thin topline and narrow sole along with a premium satin finish. Classic compact look and spec package for the best players in the game. Less offset than the Apex Pro or X Forged CB. Top-tier address — tour-inspired premium aesthetic + thin topline + compact head + minimal offset + premium satin finish.
